SEDATION
At Eastgate Dental & Cosmetic Centre, we can offer conscious sedation for nervous patients to help reduce anxiety and fear.
WHAT IS SEDATION?
Dental sedation refers to the use of medication to help patients relax and remain calm during dental procedures. It is often employed for patients with dental anxiety, fear, or phobia, as well as those undergoing lengthy or invasive dental treatments.
There are various levels of sedation that can be administered based on the patient's needs and the complexity of the procedure and are administered by skilled and experienced dentists.
The options we offer include:
- Oral sedation
- Intravenous (IV) sedation
During both forms of sedation, you are conscious throughout your treatment and you are still able to respond and communicate with the dentist and nurse.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORAL AND INTRAVENOUS SEDATION?
INTRAVENOUS (IV) SEDATION
involves a sedative being administered by a dental sedation specialist, directly into the bloodstream through an IV catheter.
The benefits of IV sedation:
- Action of the drug is quick as it’s absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
- Many people experience amnesia, so you will remember very little about the procedure.
- You can leave the clinic on the same day with your chaperone.
- A very reliable, safe and effective way to have essential dental treatment.
- Your gag reflex will be reduced making treatment more comfortable.
- Helps with severe levels of anxiety, longer appointments and complex treatments.
- It is a reversible procedure as we have medication to reverse the influence instantaneously.
ORAL SEDATION
refers to the use of medication in the form of a pill to help reduce anxiety. We typically use an oral sedation drug called Temazepam.
The benefits of oral sedation:
- The most cost-effective way to reduce anxiety during dental treatment.
- Easy method to administer the sedative medication.

How often should I book an appointment for the Hygienist? It depends on the individual, some people are more prone to gum disease and some people find it harder to keep their teeth clean. If your oral hygiene is good, we recommend booking an appointment with your dentist every 6 months, or if you are more prone, we recommend it as often as every 3 months.

Why are hygiene appointments important?Hygiene appointments are integral to maintaining your dental health and keeping your teeth and gums clean. Your appointments will also allow us to treat the different stages of gum disease and prevent any other issues before they develop further.

What are the signs of gum disease?Gum disease is very common in the UK but it often goes unnoticed until it becomes severe. Common symptoms to look out for include a swollen and red appearance to the gums, and tenderness and bleeding while brushing. Another common sign is the receding of the gums, and the feeling that your teeth are becoming looser.
